So, seeing as they are the trend atm because of their performance at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony, I thought I’d write about a topic which I seem to be hearing everywhere.
It seems many ‘fans’ out there aren’t too happy that Geri Halliwell (a.k.a Ginger Spice) didn’t wear her iconic ‘Union Jack dress’ for the performance, and that she should’ve worn it as it is a symbol of great Britain, ‘Cool Britannia’ and ‘Girl Power’ which is the essence f the group.
The reason is that Geri no longer has that dress, the one from her performance at the 1997 BRIT Awards which everyone remembers, she placed it for auction and it was bought by Peter Morton, on behalf of the Hard Rock hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.
A remake of the dress was made for her by Roberto Cavalli for the ‘Return of the Spice Girls’ tour, it was longer and the union jack was made of rhinestones and Swarovski crystals unlike its original which was a tea towel down onto a Gucci dress.
This is why she did not wear the original dress for her performance, and ‘fans’ should appreciate the one she wore as it still showed the iconic symbol and it is a reinvention of the groups image. I mean, Melanie Brown didn’t wear her leopard catsuit !
I agree, the catsuit isn’t as iconic and, let’s face it, as important as Geri’s but still, appreciate the subtle features if the dress, and, her taxi can was basically a union jack with wheels.
I’ll admit, I did hope she would wear at least a remake of her dress, but I am very happy with the one she wore. ‘fans’ need to get some facts before they start blabbing about it and complaining lol.
